Poetry, like any art, is something that can be executed through many media, or no media at all. Definitions of "poet" may differ, but for me, it's a state of mind something like wakeful dreaming. For one thing, the ear for melody and rhyme might come from a slightly hypnogogic state, perhaps and alpha brainwave...and also might be applied to other things than words, like ideas, objects or movements. And then, dream has the alternative meaning of imagining the world in a way that it's not, not really, not now, not commonly seen as, not yet, not quite conceivable as...and then realizing that world through some form of art.

Everyone are dreamers. But not everyone can put their dreams down on paper in the style that poets do. Poets are open minded, creative thinkers that are able to modify their thoughts and dreams into words and phrases for others to read and enjoy.

poets are very creative - they dream but they also give shape to their dreams so that we can all see them in the form of their poems
if they are idealists in their real life, who knows?
if they didn't dream, could they still write impressive poetry?
