It isn't unlucky, it's just something someone made up! It would be interesting to know how long this notion has been around, I only heard it for the first time a few years ago
But the significance is the 6th of January is the feast of the The Epiphany or the the three wise men, and it's the last of the twelve days of Christmas

The early western Church decided to celebrate Christmas on December 25. The East continued to treat January 6 as the day marking Jesus' birth.
In the past leaving your Christmas decorations up after the 6th January wouldn't be an appropriate thing to do!

Currently that's what everyone seems to think, and yes it relates to the 12 days of Christmas. But "unlucky" dates for this have changed over the years - at one time it was the end of January. I think these things are only unlucky if you think they are.

It's not. It's an Old Wives Tale.

The reason they come down on the 6th of January is Biblically based.

You have the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. It took the three wise men (kings) 12 days to reach the stable. Hence the twelve nights of Christmas. The 25th of December is the first night, the 5th of January is the twelfth night. After this, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus left Bethlehem.

There are some boring old farts who take theirs down earlier, but these are usually just grumpy and grumbling gits who want everyone to be as miserable as they are.

I've never even heard that one before. Tradition in my family is to put up the decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving and take them down no later than January 31. There's no luck good or bad based on when you take them down, unless you believe there is.

It is not unlucky. That is purely superstition. You could leave them up until next Christmas. It won't alter your luck or what happens to you during the year.
