The tiny areas between the cells of our tissue, the interstitial spaces, fill with lymph and other fluids, possibly blood, too, depending upon the injury . . . and swelling, or edema, occurs.

When ever body tissues sustain an injury, whatever the form of injury or d site of injury,a series of events take place known as d acute inflammatory process.
d earliest response is d narrowing of d blood vessels followed by d dilatation of these vessels n gaps start appearing in walls of these vessels thru which d liquid part of d blood in those vessels leak out into d surrounding spaces which swell up due to the excess fluid(extra cellular fluid).
In some cases d swelling may simply be due to bleeding into d tissues following a physical injury.

Swelling occurs when ligaments are injured because the ligaments are intimately connected with the functioning of the joints. Ligaments hold our joints together, helping to maintain the structural integrity of the skeletal system. When a ligament is strained, the synovial membrane of the joint where the ligament is located is "told" by the brain to produce more fluid than is required for proper functioning. This increase in synovial fluid causes the joint to swell. This swelling is our body's way of sending us a strong and important message. The body is saying, "Don't move me too quickly or too vigorously, or I will send pain signals to remind you that I need to rest in order to heal."

Because the area fills up with blood as a natural response of the body.

The best thing to do is to put an ice pack on it, rest it, and not use that part for a while until it heals up.

This is the proof of what human being or ourselves - Our hormones, tissues, blood-vessels and all parts and parcels are active at all times, including when we sleep, among which we feel our 'selfish' ego. Every action in the universe is controlled by the nature and God knows how to appoint the nature and natural phenomenons to control the universe in which one of the animals called human. In short, our body or mind are actually belong not to ourselves, but our thoughts - brain - inspires that it is myself and I thought and I decided. We need insight and foresight to study this part of Science.
