The swastika, prior to WWII, was a symbol of good luck in most of Europe. In much of Asia, it was (and still is) a symbol of blessing. Unfortunately, Hitler ruined it for the rest of us by co-opting it for his Nazi party.

The earliest use for the two interlaced triangles that make up the Star of David (aka the Shield of David or the Magen David) is from the 7th century BC, but it really didn't become a common symbol of Judaism until the the 12th century of our era when it was used on Mezzuzahs. Even there, it's not universal. Many Orthodox Jews reject it because it has associations with the occult (where it is said to be used for summoning spirits).

In Hinduism, the hexagram made of two triangles represents harmony - perfect balance between God and Man, and between Male and Female.

The swastika is often encountered as a runic sympol signifying fire. Sometimes the arms are bent in the opposite direction than Adolf's version
