How To Find a Lost file
We have learned how to save a file, how to move a file, how to copy a file, and how to open a file. But what if you cannot remember where a particular file was saved or downloaded to. Luckily, Windows has a Find Files and Folders feature which can come very handy.

Click on "Start", point to "Find"or "Search" then click on "Files or Folders". " The Search dialog box opens. Notice there are three tabs in the dialog box.

If you know the name of file, use the first tab marked "Name". It is all self-explanatory really. Write the name of the file, or just part of it, in the first box. In the "Look in" box, write the broad location (such as your computer's hard drive) where you think the file is. In our example, we choose Local Disk (C)

Tip: The computer will give you perhaps hundreds of results because it searches every word of the phrase. For example, in our search "Letter to David", the computer will give us all files with the word "Letter", the word "to" as well as the word "David". This search would find hundreds of files with any of these three words. To minimize the number of results, use just one word for the search choosing the word that best describes what you are looking for. In our case it is "David".

If you do not know the file name, but remember some words contained in the file, you can type the text that you remember in the box labeled "Containing text".

If you would like to narrow the search even more, go to "Search Options". Here you can find all files that were created, modified, or last accessed between specified dates. A very handy feature, especially if you forget the name of the file.

You can choose the"Type" as we will do in our example. We know it is a Microsoft Word Document, so we scrolled down to "Microsoft Word Document" and clicked on it.

Now the computer has only to search for a Word document with the word "David" in the title. This should be very easy for it to do.

Now simply click the "Search Now" button and in a second or two the computer will find the document.

Don't be afraid to use Windows "Find: Files and Folders" feature. It is a very handy tool. And it is not difficult to use it at all. Just practice a few times. You will be glad you did when you've lost or misplaced a valuable file.

Look in c:\documents and settings\(old account name)

You might find you're denied access - in which case log in as administrator and change security on that directory and subdirectory by setting the "owner" to be your account and changing the security rights.

I've intentionally answered this at a high level only so if you need more help feel free to drop me an email.
