I've had my cartilage pierced about 7 or 8 weeks. Well last week I had to take my starter earrings out because of irritation. The backs started to dissinerate & look nasty. So I put my other earrings in. Well today when I woke up my right side was irritated I guess from having the back on too tight. Well I tried to put the starters back in to see if they would be better again because I have other backs for it. The back of my ear piercing started to bleed. I was able to get my other earring in && the blood stopped. Do you think it bleed because of irritation && should the piercing be okay? It's not infected because there wasnt any puse or anything like that.

Also has anyones hole healed within the 8 weeks && if so is there a way to tell if your hole is healed?? Please get back to me on these two questions..

Well , it was a very bad idea to take your earring out. A piercing in the cartilage takes six months to heal like the belly button. When you took out your earring you umm how do I say it ..."broke" the skin surrounding your ear ring, though resulting in your ear bleeding. I think yours going to have to pick an earring and your going to have to leave it in for another 6 months so it can totally heal over.

Best of Luck!

Your first mistake was getting pierced with a gun rather than a needle. I suggest going to a piercing/tattoo store and having the professional there look at it. He'll be able to give you higher quality jewelery that will actually allow your angry new piercings to heal. The backs of traditional earrings get really cruddy (as you've experienced) and can really slow healing time. The best thing to get is probably a CBR (one of those small hoops held together with a little bead), which will allow the piercing to drain and heal more easily.

It probably bled because it had healed enough to form little clots, which, when you changed the earring, were ripped off and dragged along the inside of your hole, cutting it a bit. As long as you take good care of it and keep it clean it should be ok, but it's really best to avoid moving it around too much, since it will prolong the healing process.

I've got a couple of piercings through some really thick bits of cartilage (rook, daith), and they took way longer than 8 weeks to heal. It was closer to 4 months for both of them before I could sleep on them without them being sore in the morning.

What are you using to clean your piercings and keep them happy? You should be using a good antibacterial liquid soap (like Dial) no more than twice a day (overcleaning can cause irritation), and you should also be doing sea salt soaks - dissolve a bit of salt in some warm water until it is about as salty as tears (I use a shot glass), then soak a cotton ball in it and apply it to your piercings. Hold it on there for a good long time. Do this a few times a day and it'll heal better and faster.

Whatever you do, don't just take the jewelery out! If you do, any bacteria can become trapped inside the piercing and cause a massive infection.

Good luck!

Often times starter earrings' posts are larger than what we wear everyday. This may be what caused the bleeding when you tried to put them back in.
