I'm planning on buying a cheap 40GB hard drive for about 70$ to store my pictures and videos in. I was wondering, are external hard drives dependable in keeping such media? I guess my only concern would be for it to not be erased or damaged.

For those who have experience with external hard drves/storage, I would really love to hear about your experiences with them, as well as what you would recommend.

They are the most reliable backup solution.

But they do go wrong, like everything.

If the data is really important have multiple backup strategies.
As well as the external disk burn DVD/CD copies as well.

Yes They're Good If You Like To Carry You Files With You Anytime, Anywhere. Here Are Some Good Brands "iOmega", "Western Digital", "LaCie",

You Have To Handle It With Care And Since Hard Drives Are Very Sensitive, And It's Also Small And Easy To Steal, So That Puts Your Sensitive Data At Risk So You Should Never Leave It Anywhere.

The drives themselves are really no different than internal drives.

I have two 160gb external drives that I use for backups. One of them is off-site and the other is in the house but away from the computer. I use a D-link GSM6000 wireless storage device for the backups and connect an external USB device to that as well.

They are not as fast as an internal drive, but for backups, this shouldn't be a problem.
