Rainforests are simply that: forests and lots of rain. They can exist anywhere, even far north, such as the Pacific Northwest where I live these days with the mold and bugs and weather forecasts that go like this, literally: Monday, rain. Tuesday, showers. Wednesday, rain showers. Thursday, rain and flooding. Friday, drizzles. Saturday, heavy drizzles. Sunday, heavy flooding.

The complex environment of damp caused by the rain allows plant and animal life to thrive. The trees grow in layers according to their height, the lowest being scrubland. Species live in the areas to which they are suited and, because of this separation, different, combatting animals can, while living in the same ecosphere, cleverly avoid each other. The forest also has an inhospitable environment to untrained humans which allows plant and animal life to thrive.
So, basically because we can't/won't go in and kill everything.
(sorry: didn't read the 'simple explanation!)

1.THE EQUATORIAL REGIONS HAVE A VERY HIGH AVERAGE ANNUAL OF RAINFALL . This provides the necessary water for plants photosynthesis.
2. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF THESE EQUATORIAL REGIONS , encourages plant growth by providing the optimum temperature for plants enzymatic photosynthesis.
3. THE LONG HOURS OF SUNLIGHT IN THESE REGIONS all year round is a big contributing factor for maximum photosynthesis and plant growth

The question answers itself, they are called such because of the amount of rain that falls in the area where they grow
