Windows SP1 means service pack one. Service pack one is the early edition with standard security service and features. SP2 is service pack 2 with latest and upgraded features for windows and better security service.

Microsoft accumulated all those patches what were considered not critical to daily use, but to the overall performance of the operating system and build an standalone executable called as the "Service Pack". As this is a ongoing process, SP1 and SP2 were released for XP.
