If the surface is concrete or brick the previous answers might work. If its a flexible surface (macadam etc) then the diesel (or petrol or oil) acts as a solvent to the binder in the material causing the surface to break up, severity / depth proportional to amount of spillage.

this will sound dumb, but it works. soak the area with a light, clear oil, or good old WD 40. leave it soak...oh at least an hour, but make sure it stays wet. then clean up the area with dawn dish washing soap in as hot a water as you can stand to put your hands in.

Why does it work? Oil dissolves oil. this brings it up to the surface again, and then the dawn and water can wash it away.

Cat litter works great for this. Cover the area where the spill is at on the driveway with cat litter and grind it in with your foot. Sweep it up and if that didn't get it all repeat.
