Technically, according to employment law, you can be sacked while off work sick because you are in breach of contract. However most firms operate a sickness policy which state what sick leave, if any, you are allowed. In the UK you self-certificate for the 1st 7 days and then get a sick note off your GP. If you want a sick note before that period you may well have to pay for it.
Proving that your boss is harassing you may be hard to prove as it's you phoning him and not the other way round.
You are doing the right thing by keeping him informed and he should appreciate that.
When you are back at work, according to ACAS guidelines you cannot be disciplined for having time off for genuine sickness.
If you have a union then speak to them.

Go to your doctor and get a sick note from them! Quite often employers are suspicious when employees are sick after a holiday, so a sick note should sort them out.
Personally I don't think that you should go into work when you're ill as it's going to be a disaster for everyone else.
I don't think they can actually sack you for being sick - i'd check your contract and see what it says about time of sick and all that.
I got threatened once with that, even though I had mumps(!). Just threaten to take your employer to a tribunal - that should shut them up!

If you are sure that you got flu, then complain about this to boss's boss, i.e, his superior. This may sure muddle the relationship between you and your boss, but after some time he will respect you.

you should go in, offer to make him a cup of coffee and stir it with your knob. it might not help the situation, but you'll feel better for it
