How did Sicily originate.?

Question

Did it develop it's origin from vulcano activity, was it created as a part of the mainland Italy and floated it away, or is a part of it still under
water (between calabria and the north-east side of Sicily)

Many think that the earth was all connected and the oceans were in a separate place. Somewhere in the earth's past, the earth was divided. Must have been quite an event for the living. Whoa Nelly!
