Clive you are soooo right. Johnny keep coming with the questions, some good, some bad. However the Americans at the top, did want to join the war, its just that public opinion was against them(2%). They knew that it was going to be a total global war at some point and with the depression the US govt. had to distract the public. They knew the Japanese were on thier way, they knew where too, from Japanese documents they thought they had the element of surprise. Why did the US remove all thier a/c carriers to a safer place? When the attack came on PH, the day after 2,000,000 americans joined up!!! Got what they wanted, didn't they. Another thing, after the war the yanks were not afraid of the Ruskies but of the British Empire.....

You could say so much more.
The changes to our language that give it greater universal appeal.
Introduction of American haute cuisine via their chains of self-service cafés.
Roosevelt's annexation of numerous British bases and acquisition of UK investments in exchange for some ancient ordinance in
1939.
Their assistance in dismantling the British Empire after the second world war.
Their support of Egypt when the Suez Canal was nationalised by Nasser.
Their enforced eradication of the population of the British possession Diego Garcia so that there would be room for the airbase and nuclear bombers.
Hollywood's efforts in re-writing most of British History.
Thank You Americans for remaining consistent in your attitude to Britain ever since the Boston Tea Party.

PS I must correct Sarah S who is most unfair. We are not still paying the Americans for WW2, the last payment was made on 31st December 2006.

If there were less people like you who criticise everybody else for what they have or haven't done then may be there would not be as many wars in the first place. Its people like you that make me wish we still had national service, may be if you joined the armed forces and did the job they did you would not be so ready to criticise. We should be proud of all the armed forces who do a job that I'm glad I don't have to do, and if we all stopped blaming others for what as happened in the past then may be we wouldn't need these guys to die for ungrateful pricks like you anyway.

I am Sick and Bloody Tired of the Snide , Derogatory , Anti American Remarks , Comments and Lies aimed at our Best Friends and Allies , without America ,Australia and Great Britain the "Free World" would Not Exist -- the Vile and Despotic Leaders that have Surfaced -- Particularly over the last 100 Years - have been Defeated by these Great , Freedom Loving Nations - that have given unlimited service to Protect Millions and Millions from the Evil Dictators - whose sole ambition is to Suppress and Dominate the World - The Mindless Postings on this and other Q & A Sites by Moronic , Lunatic , Ignorant - "Know Nothing" Fools and their Anti American Propaganda is a Clear and Undeniable Indication of the existence of Many Many Simple Minded , Twisted Foools -- Regards , Thanks and Good Wishes to All Americans reading this Posting.....

Strange sense of History you did not decide to join the war as a favour to the rest of the world you had to after Germany and Japan declared war on the US after the pearl harbour when the sneaky little ones arrived to early on a Sunday and the look outs at barbers point thought it was a flock of birds

Dude, read a history book once in a while.

We were there when you needed us but it was not official. We sent supplies, planes w/pilots, and advisers. We were hoping to avoid going into the war due to the depression and ended up going into it full force later and saved your butts.

Ms_Placed,
Some of us do realize that the French were fighting England across the world and forced them to divert resources away from the US. The French navy also did a good job for us but most people seem to think that you need boots on the ground to help win a war so they don't think of (or realize) the full impact of the French on the revolutionary war.

The Americans don't realize the debt owed to the French in regard to the Revolution against the Brits, so it's a draw.

Absolutely. Glad to see that our American cousins are making up for the fact that they were late for the last 2 world wars by being really punctual in Iraq

...one of the greatest victory's of the war was the battle of Britain, many consider it to be the turning point, including Hitler who suspended Operation sea lion because of it........oh the Americans were not there (except the ones who knew that Hitler would be over to see them soon and flew with the RAF).

PS i don't think any Brits missed the sarcasm.....its our national pastime......

well we all know that the yanks won the war single handedly .and they didnt come into the war for two years after it started as they were too busy selling equipment to the nazi regime .
prescott bush ,g.w.b.grandfather was caught making millions off of the nazi government and it took the fbi to stop him .
funny how his son then became director of the cia ,makes you think .
