Anyone got any ideas of how to pass the time apart from reading, writing, drawing, sleeping, knitting, crosswords and getting hammered?

Got a DS and/or PSP?

Bring a cd/mp3 player. Most major airlines even have radios, but special headphones are required...sometimes free, sometimes 3-5 bucks.

Anything else....Give everyone you can see around you a name. (Silently, I don't think they'd take to kindly to being given a name change...) Try to find out as much about them as you can without looking like a total stalker. See how well you know the residents of your little "town" afterwards by quizzing yourself.

Well, last year I left Italy for New Zealand and - trust me - that was indeed a long flight!

If you are the sort of person that can sleep on a plane, that's probably one of the best things you can do. Usually you're given everything you might need to make your sleep more comfortable.

However, if you're like me and cannot sleep on a plane no matter how hard you try, then you could

1) spend the whole flight gazing abstent-mindedly at the screen in front of your seat (if there is one, that is), possibly at the satellite images showing you where the aircraft is, hoping it will all be over soon, or

2) try to read a book or a magazine, even though the unbearable noise of the engine might make it almost impossible to do, or

3) try to listen to music on a mp3 player, even though it adds on to the noise I've just told you about and your eardrums may be seriously damaged, or

4) start a conversation with the person sitting next to you, hoping it won't turn out to have been a bad idea. I was very lucky once.

What I would do is try all points (1, 2, 3 and 4) to keep myself busy, alternating them with a nice walk to the loos, ideal to stretch one's legs and air one's bum, as well as to see what the others are doing to pass THEIR 11 hours. They could give you some excellent ideas, or they could be all sleeping and piss you off because you can't.

Also, I would SERIOUSLY ADVISE YOU to ask for an AISLE seat, so that you'll be free to stand up and walk whenever you wish to.

Enjoy your flight!

Well, I have to admit that I always take a crossword book with me but I don't usually get very much of it done because I just love being in the aircraft.

Our longest flight to date was 13 1/2 hours to Kuala Lumpur. My husband watched the films on the screen in the back of the seat (in front!) and I had the route map on pretty well all of the time. Although about half of the flight was in darkness, I still kept looking out of the window (port hole?).

Take an interest in what is going on around you, inside and outside of the aircraft.

I am very jealous of you and wish that I was taking the flight! Have a good trip and enjoy it for what it is.

Getting hammered or at least slight pissed is always a good option and the best is sleeping it off for 5 hours but this depends on how noisy the flight is! You have seemed to rule out most of the normal options have you thought about trying to join the mile high club!!??

My daughter is shouting over travel connect4!

All of the above, plus DVDs, music, working on a computer, computer games, etc. If I'm flying over land, I love simply looking out the window and watching the world from a seldom-seen perspective :-)

I also agree with the first answer - having a chat with Prince Valium is an excellent way to pass the time - just don't mix with booze!

Personally I always fly with "diazepam airways".

Your flight will seem to last no more than 20 minutes!

Or why not lock yourself in the toilet for 20- 30 minutes, and flush the toilet about 50 times while you are in there. This activity is becoming increasingly popular with young ladies on long intercontinental flights!

Get a PSP. I spend half my life on aircraft with work and I bought a PSP about a year ago to pass the time - it's fantastic- apart from playing games on it you can also put films and music on it.

Hope that the people seated around you are nice and make a few new friends? Or, get or borrow a portable DVD player and catch up on a favorite TV series or one that you missed, tons are out on DVD now.

ipod, inventive games like starting conversations with people you'd never talk to in a million years, get on Karma's good side a befriend someone who seems really sad/upset/bored/angry, and just try to make their day. Christmas shop in the Skymall (or pretend to), video games, if you're not in a monogamous relationship pick someone appropriate out, (like not someone else's spouse) and flirt rediculously the whole time, just stay safe.
