great pay, exciting job prospects, creative work.
on the negative side, it takes ages to qualify.
as the Pavement lyrics go:
"architecture students are like virgins with an itch they cannot scratch,
never build a building 'til they're 50, what kind of life is that?"

The biggest disadvantage would be the cost of education (time and money) vs. potential payout. Architects have to go through at least 5 years of school, then intern for 3 years just to get salary equal or less then comparable engineering graduates fresh out of school. As far as what architects can or cannot do, the limit really is the liability he or she is willing to take on. If an architect feels comfortable to take on all the liability, he or she can certainly do so by not hiring consulting engineers. Architectural education is very broad, that usually covers at least some structural and other engineering components, just that since architecture is such a broad profession, we tend not to be the best at areas other then aesthetic and rely on consultants that is best at what they do.

advantages are that, if hired you can commad the fee. In government engineering offices, you are upper rosters of personnel whether or not you pass board exam. The disadvantage is that if no more structure to construct and there's competition.
