Hi Gemma,
take pics of the hole and the damage caused to the vehicle by it and contact the council. Tell them what happened and they will sort things out for you.

Trouble is if he ran into a pothole that big he cant have been watching the road very well, or was going to fast.
You can only sue them if you can prove negligence and then the police might prosecute the driver for not paying due care and attention, so really it seems like you will have to fit the bill unless you have the correct insurance, i would change insurance company to one that will cover you next time

First thing, get a photo of the pothole and the damage. Then contact the council who will unload you onto their insurers. Then watch the insurers suggest the car was not being driven with enough care.
Try to get evidence from others who have had experience with this 'ole.

Good luck!

To completely wreck an alloy wheel and arch he must have been going at a pretty fast speed.

well,if your other half can afford to pay £2800 just for a set of bloody wheels when a lot of us have a whole car which ain't
worth that much, then surely he must have money to throw away?the poor thing might just have to setle for buying a new one himself.what a shame.
