You get it by converting your grades to the GPA system for the US.
For example if you have two courses, math and english, and you get an A for math and B for English, and a math course is a 3 unit course whereas English is a 4 unit course, your GPA will be calculated as follow:
Math: 4.0 * 3 = 12
Eng: 3.0* 4 = 12
Total: (12+12)/7 = 3.43 that's your cumulative GPA.
the 7 above is the total credits for the 2 course.

A= 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B=3.0, B- = 2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, D- = 0.7. For any F's you get no credit.

Hope this isnt confusing.

You have to understand that the admissions requirements are just the MINIMUM. If you have a 3.0 then that does NOT mean that you will be admitted to the university, It only means that you have met the minimum standards to apply. UNC is a prestigious school and many more students apply than can be accepted.

You can email to the department at UNC that you want to join and see what they say about your application.

Also, you should remember that there are very few scholarships for foreign students, so you will need a lot of money. To have a small apartment in the Chapel Hill area will cost about $7000- $10000 a year and you will probably need a car unless you are living in a dorm on campus..

They "translate" your scores. If you apply as a foreigner, you have different requirements to meet.
