The fly life cycle is composed of four stages: egg, larva (commonly known as a maggot), pupa, adult. The eggs are laid in decaying flesh, animal dung, manure, or pools of stagnant water - whatever has ample food for the larva.

Essentially, the flies leave eggs in feces in order to reproduce maggots which become flies.

Faeces smell good to flies. Our brains tell us that it smells horrible so that we stay away from it, the same way as rotting food smells bad. It's a human warning sign that it's not good for us. The fly's smell receptors (or whatever they are) tell the fly that it's good.
