I am going to be starting a service where I manually submit people's websites to web directories. I know there are problems with auto submitters, and that they should not be used, but I don't remember what the problems are. I'm currently writing my ad copy, so if someone knowledgeable in this SEO-type field could answer my question, then great. I want to make it convincing not to use auto submission software, and to have me manually submit instead. Thanks!

It's amazing isn't it !! You ask a very good question about auto-submission to web directories and you get two answers about auto-submission to search engines. One of them from someone who claims to know about SEO :) LOL

The answer to your question is as you say, that all the auto-submitters have problems. For example even the best http://www.submitsuite.com/products/website-submitter.htm does not allow the addition of directories on demand.

If you are starting a manual service then I think you should advertise:

1. That you do NOT use directory auto-submission software.

2. That you will submit only to high quality directories, like this list here for example http://info.vilesilencer.com/seo-friendly-list.xls

3. That you allow variable titles and descriptions to be specified.

Good luck with the new service!

Basically auto submitters can be seen as spam by the search engines, especially if they are submitted many times in a short period of time. If that is the case Google will ban the site. As a SEO I believe the best way to have a site indexed is through linking and perhaps part of your fee could be used to buy the appropriate links. I use IBP9 and it has a email software linking component that does the trick.

its always better to see the directory's PR first and then submit ur website there so better to see manually and then submit. Also google also gives importance to those incoming links which has good PR and link exchange is not suggested by google so avoid that, try not to use paid link option also unnecessary money gets blocked, when you have other options.

The best argument against auto submitters is that search engines do not like them.

As proof, point your customers to the Google Webmaster Guidelines where they explicitly say that they do not like auto submitters and even named WebPosition Gold as a product that they do not advise people to use

Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

Tell your clients that if you don't want your site to be banned by Google and the other search engines, use manual submit instead of these automatic submission tools. Afterall, it is clear in the guidelines.
