I don't know - it is what is perplexing me at the moment too. It seems from looking at answers that one person replies negatively to a question and then others follow like pack rats for the kill.

I guess few people have the intelligence not to abuse.

I agree with you that abuse is a misuse of power - I don't think it always uses bonds of understanding etc. anyone anywhere can take their disappointments in life out on someone they perceive as weaker.

I think it might be possible to stop being a victim by seeing the perpetrators of any level of abuse, as just wallowing and drowning in all their pathetic ignorance. They depend on us respecting their strength and cleverness to be able to get one over on us.

Also to stop being bound by rules of politeness when someone is abusive - do whatever you have to do to stop them - no holds barred - no one deserves to be on the receiving end of this kind of barbarity. So get away from them dont take what they say personally let them know that you dont admire what they are doing and dont get in the ring with them and let their behaviour pull you out of shape.

you want to know how to minimise the risk?
education and awareness with children, learning to say no, to tell an adult and to feel good about themselves.
For adults to look for the signs of abuse in children, to want to know about who they choose as babysitter, boyfriend, scout leader, sports coach and anyone to touches their children.
To be alert for changes in behaviour and to have coomn sense not to panic when first confronted by difficult symptoms
