It is erroneous to see the system of government as the sole criterion in judging whether a government is "best". I believe that the quality of operators of the system is as important, if not more important than the type of system. Further more it depends on the environment.

This explains a few things; The fact that the US in spite of its war mongering to spread its democracy by force in the Middle East and other lands does not appear to be making much progrss. US democracy will simply not not work over there. Note too that while it is working in other environments, democracy apart from lip service, has failed to produce fruits in many third world countries. These areas for many reasons, are just not conducive for the western blanket conception of democracy. When a good operator is in power, things work whether it is democracy or some other form and vice versa.

It is not about democracy. It is about good governance. That is why (forget about western propaganda) Americans would have nothing to brag about to Libya citizens in terms of standard of living. This is in spite of the fact that the Libyan leader is a soldier (he has never told us that he is no more).

I Agree with Lori K. Democracy by nature will never protect minority rights.(I don't means racial minority) Majority wins all the time. That is why America is not a true Democracy and there is no true Democratic country in existence. America is a republic. If we were a democracy, Gore would of won the election, rather than George W. Bush. (May be that is an arguement for a Democracy) If Majority always win, there is no interplay to slow down and make people think. Mob rule all the time.

Churchill said Democracy is the worst form of government in the world. Except for all the others.

Franklin said Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner.

These are great thinkers and great proponents of Democracy that knew it had plenty of problems.

Who am I to argue with Churchill and Franklin? I'd say Democracy is the best system but not without protections for individual rights. As we have in America with the Bill of Rights.

yes, it actually is the highest a human could expect(if the democratic forms meets all the equirements)......also "democracy" as a whole might not be called best but the best political system would be which maintains a good balance between a "REPUBLIC" democracy and some ideas of "light"socialism (maintaining high standards of living for people, not much difference between rich and poor are some factors in liht socialism)

"Best" is a very vague term. I personally feel that a pure and uncorrupted socialism would be the "best" government. By pure and uncorrupted, I mean everyone gets their fair share and nobody is left behind. Of course, in practice this doesn't work. Look at socialist Russia--they implemented a policy of "everyone is equal" and for a time it was good. Eventually, corrupt officials took office and altered the policy to essentially be "Everyone is equal...but some people are more equal than others." and things went to hell.

I have to admit, I like our democracy. But when Congress meets and does nothing but vote themselves another raise before leaving for another 2-month vacation...I can't help but feel that things need to change.
