Very easy plants to grow. Those with particularly colorful centers need bright light to continue producing colorful leaves. Some will form rather larger colonies over time.

I've seen some billbergias nutans for sale recently on eBay, and they make terrific hanging basket plants because they have pendulous flowers. A basket full in bloom is quite a sight!

You already have 2 really good answers, but since I love bromeliads, I couldn't resist.

Towanda said it all. An additional hint: bromeliads like having the funnel created by the leaves full of water. It simulates natural growing conditions.

Bright indirect light, throughly water when dry. Mist often. After the bloom dies, the plant will not bloom again but it will put out a side plant. After the baby is grown it will bloom. They are great because the blooms last so long and even after the bloom is gone they are good for decorations.

The answers you've received are great, I would add that overwatering is the bane of houseplants. Keep them slightly on the dry side, mist often, keep the cup full of water and don't neglect air circulation.
