Sanctions on Iraq strengthened Saddam's power within the country.

Sanctions on North Korea have strengthened Kim Jong Il's power within the country.

Sanctions on Zimbabwe have strengthened Robert Mugabe's power within the country.

Etc., etc., etc. In EVERY case worldwide where a country had two sides, one a dictator and one wanting freedom, external pressures by other governments STRENGTHENED the dictator's grasp. Every goddamned single case.

In 1979, the religious nutballs had absolute control of Iran. By 1999, the democratic movement was strong and growing. It has only been since Chicken George took power and his anti-Iranian rhetoric began that the clerics have regained strength in Iran.

If Iran were left alone, it would eventually turn back into a democracy, which it WAS before 1953 when the US and UK helped the Shah overthrow the democratically elected government.

The US and UK helped the Shah because they wanted cheap oil. (Sound familiar?) There is no respect for sovereign nations who want self determination; imposing pro-US dictators for US benefit has been US foreign policy since 1890. When the US "exports democracy", they remove it from other countries.

Why should they want him out of power ? Because he is developing a nuclear deterrent that will keep the US from doing an Iraq on them. If i were Iranian i would`nt be in a hurry to get rid of him.

It is not going to happen; Ahmadinejad is the most respected president of Islamic countries.

Sounds like he has locked himself in. My guess is if you don't like him he has a diabolical way of changing your opinion one way or the other. If he continues on his tyrannical path eventually the world will hate him and he will be removed having never learned the lesson of Saddam...
