I got invited to be on a select team (outside of school). You have to be commited and not miss games or practice a lot and love soccer and want to get better and all that. That totally describes how I feel about soccer. If I join this team instead of the normal team for the league, I start practice earlier (sometime in Feb.). The season lasts until April I think.

Then there's my school soccer team. I planned on trying out. Only one problem. The school soccer season lasts from Feb. to March. Same time as the begining of the Select team season. If i was on the school team, I'd miss a lot of soccer practice at first. Not gonna cut it if I'm on the select team. I already said I want to be on the select team (told the people in charge, that is), but it's not guranteed yet.

So do I change my mind about the select team (and play on the normal team), so I can possibly play on the school team for a while? Or do I try out for the school team next year, and be on the select team this year?help

My friends don't want to be on the school team (except for MAYBE 1) and my friends who have been invited to the select team said no, and those who haven't been invited said they would say no. I have thought about the bonus of guys coming to watch the school games... =) but then I couldn't be on the select team. I don't know if we have a varsity team.

Oh, and BTW the select team travels a lot and plays tougher teams.

My friends don't want to be on the school team (except for MAYBE 1) and my friends who have been invited to the select team said no, and those who haven't been invited said they would say no. One of my friends was one the school team last year and hated it. One girl was SO mean. We have a new coach this year, and he was my old math teacher so I already know him. I have thought about the bonus of guys coming to watch the school games... =) but then I couldn't be on the select team. I don't know if we have a varsity team.

My parents and I talked about the select team, and we replied saying I'd like to be on it ages ago. But I think I can still change my mind, since it isn't for sure if I'm on the team yet.

Playing for both teams is a good idea, but it might be too exhausting, plus I'll also have homework. The select team has 2 pract./week, and Sunday games. School team plays and pract. M,T,W,Th only. (2 games, 2 pract.)

select team practices Wed. and Fri. I think. I'm not sure if guys would see me on the select team, cuz it's outside of school and all. Unless they happened to pass by where our game was, but most of them r kinda far. Being on the school team would let more people notice me (games, practices, and announcments). But I also just love soccer, and it's not all about guys. Being on the select team would let me improve more, I think.

It all depends on the team that will help you grow as a player. If you plan on playing during college, I would worry about which team will give you the most exposure to college recruiters. I used to have college recruiters come to my Select games during tournaments and even a few tournaments when my Select team played college teams. I don't know where you live, but when I used to play soccer in high school, the select teams played in the Fall and Varsity high school teams played in the Spring (noone played select during the spring, actually it was against our State's High School Atheletics rules)

I wouldn't worry about what team your friends are playing on because you'll be friends with your teammates no matter what team you chose to play on (well you should be :-p) Also, there are boys who are in the select leagues :-) They'll watch you play in the Select league also, so don't worry about the boys.

It's all about what you want out of soccer. If you want your game to move forward/become a better player, then the select or premier team should be the easy pick. Everything will be at a higher level...coaching, team-mates, opponents etc, which in turn will make you better. After a week or two with that team, team-mates will become new/good friends. My son's skills improved dramatically playing elite premier mainly because of the competitions/battles in practice and the level of coaching.

On the other hand, if soccer is more of a social thing for you, then the school team may be your choice. Some kids have more fun etc being a star on a lower level team vs being one of many good players on a high level team. Most competitive people want to play at the highest level possible though.

Finally, what about playing on both teams? Most school coaches fully understand and often embrace the select level.

Depending on the soccer environment you are in, you might be able to do both. Ask the school team coach about a possibility of doing that. Also discuss it with the select team coach as some clubs do not allow you to play other sports or on other teams.

I am a youth soccer coach in a rec league so I have seen rec and select teams. My daughter is on a select team that allows you to play other sports as long as soccer comes first; on the otherhand my son's future select team soccer club does not allow that. That is okay with him since he love the sport. You have to find these things out because there is a lot more to select soccer than just wanting to be on the team. There are team fees, tournaments that cost money and travel expenses to think about. Don't forget to discuss it with your parents as it can get expensive. If that is an issue ask about scholarships or sponsorship to play on the select team.

Final piece of advice, if you are really serious about soccer you need to go to a team where the coach and team will HELP YOU develop as a player. If you will be playing on a team that is not going to challenge you and help improve your skills then I say don't do it.

Discuss it with the coaches, parents, players and attend some of the select team practices before you make the final commitment. And it is a commitment.

Good luck.

I have a friend who did both, she was really busy all the time but somehow managed to pull it off. you obviously must be a good player to be on a select team so there is probably a good chance you'd be varsity if you played for your school. are you into school spirit? which team are your friends playing for? if you play for the school im sure boys will come to watch... i did.

I personally would play for the school team. Or, you could possibly switch back and forth, although returning year after year would probably grant you more playing time than if you switched back and forth. I think playing for the school would give you the opportunity to get to know your classmates better and plus, maybe you will get scouted to play for a university or something. But, it's your decision.

go with the school team. Then all your friends will know how good you are even if they don't play soccer

I say you just play soccer! You've gotta love it and don't care where you play, you have just gotta want to play!

Otherwise don't play for either, practise juggling with a tennis ball for an hour each day, work on your fitness, and practise like crazy and play for your country one day!!!
