"The last episode aired on May 6, 1997, on Fox TV. After that episode aired, Fox was trying to decide whether to renew the show. When they decided to cancel it, they didn't notify the cast. 'Ed O'Neill (I)' said he was on vacation and a couple staying near him read about the cancellation in the newspaper and told him about it. He bought them a meal in appreciation."
I also remember an interview with Christina Applegate where she said that after so many years of being one of the biggest shows on television, they werent even given any kind of a send off, and it changed her perception of the business forever.

Is a bit of both. It has ended, but due to the fact that the producers did not know how many more episodes they were going to make the last episode was just a regular episode. Then they just cancelled it abruptly. As Ed O'Neil said everyone knew this was going to be the last season. What was dissappointing was that instead of having a final episode (probably an one hour special) to give a proper ending to the show it was done in the most unprofeessional way.
