yes, but loosely, there are a lot of things that are differnet but the basic story is the same

Partially.

Kipling wrote two Jungle Books and in them there are eight stories about Mowgli, the man cub. It was these that were used as the basis for the Disney film.

The book also contains some other quite famous stories, such as Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the mongoose and Toomai of the Elephants, both stories I remember being adapted for children's television programmes some years ago.

Very loosely. In the movie, Bagheera is called "Baggy-Buddy" at one point. Kipling wouldn't have written that to save his life...

Check the credits - it's almost always stated if a screenplay is based on a book.
