Do they all have something in common which makes them have that word in their name?

they are all called "New" something because the city or state was dedicated to a city or town in Europe or other country. there is a "york" in England, for example. So, when people from York came to america, they labeled that place "New" York.

For many of them, they are variations off of other cities, mostly European. For example, the city of Orleans, France, is the basis for which those who came to the new world named New Orleans, as in the Orleans of America.

For New Jersey, the same can be said of the Bailiwick of Jersey, a British Crown dependency off the coast of Normandy, France.

it happened in the past that the actual city where the civilization used to live is far and during the developement of civilization, new cities came into existance. Those which were near to the older one's were given name behind those cities.

Is it because they are named after another place that already exists. Such as Jersey (new yersey) york (new york) and so on........

New Mexico is named after Mexico, of which it once was part of.
