Is there a cradle or something similar that I can place my old semi-fried HD in and hook it up via usb to my other comp to retrive files? Doesn't Best-Buy offer some service which will retrieve data off of a busted HD?

Data is not always recoverable on failed hard drives. I do recommend you speak to an expert about transferring the data to another drive. From what you wrote it sounds like you will have good success in retrieving the data.

Good luck!

Well you CAN buy a kit that will make an internal hard drive into an external one (via the USB cable usually). But I would recommend saving your money since there's no guarantee you'd be able to salvage data off that drive in the first place. I suggest mounting the drive in your PC as a primary slave to your main hard disk, and try transferring files over that way. Start with Scandisk to see if you can isolate the damaged sectors, and maybe you can salvage some data.

You can get a drive enclosure that allows you to connect a hard drive to your laptop or another computer via USB. I have one from Sabrent that I use for my own Dell desktop (it's a "slimline" computer with NO room for expansion - bad choice on my part). I got it at Tiger Direct a couple of years back to add a hard drive for my research, and it works just fine. If you can put the drive in that, you may be able to recover at least some of your files. Presuming you don't have room in your laptop for a master/slave drive combo, this is the way to attach it that I'd recommend.
