My desktop was running very slow, so i opened the task manager and clicked the "Performance" tab and it shows the "CPU Usege" meter is at 100% (A graph indicating the percentage of time the processor is working. This counter is a primary indicator of processor activity.). There is no task listed that could be responsible for this neether. What could be causeing it to do that?

Look under the "processes" tab.
Sort the list by "CPU" highest order.

"System idle process" should be using almost all the threads (80 & above ... often 99)

Identify any other processes that are regularly in second & third place.

The processor may be working overtime due to excessive swap file usage.... are you low on RAM ? This would explain it.

Common software causes :

- antivirus background scan
- diskeeper service
- other processor intensive TSRs

From my experience, too many windows opened and low memory caused slowdown or worse to hang. Another cause is 90% usage of Hard disk that left no more room for defragmentation. So delete not so important programs and minimize savings on hard disk. Save on Diskette. Defrag once a week. The last cause I know is by virus. Install anti-virus program.

To the right of the performace tab is "processes" tab. Click that. Click on CPU to arrange by CPU usage.

You should see which programs are using the most CPU. Let us know which one it is, because some programs are important and others can be ended.

Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and go to processes. If there is a process called "WAOL.exe", close it. It will appear to have a low CPU Usage, but you will notice your usage will drop greatly after ending this process.
