Nooooo! This is insane. If you work for an organisation which only pays statutory sick pay, then they are not paying this - the government is! If you are off sick for three days, then you get nothing. If it is more than three days, you are eligible for SSP. If you are off seven days or longer, then you need a signed doctors note. The company claim all SSP back from the government so it costs them nothing. Go to see your local employment office, or Citizens Advice Bureau for help on this.

In the UK we are lucky as we have lots of regulations to protect workers. Your employer sounds very strapped for cash if they can't pay you any sick pay above SSP. SSP comes from YOU! It is what you pay in and it is on your wage slip as 'national insurance contribution' something like £56 a week or something worse. Now, if your employer is bullying employees into working unreasonable hours or penalising you for being off ill, then this is not good working practice.
Have a look at the UK department of trade and industry, website as there are lots of things such as the Working Time regulations, for example which tell you the maximum hours, and length of breaks and conditions you should work under. Your employer has to provide chairs and hot water and somewhere clean for you to rest etc...
Please don't name the company but I am interested as the their line of business, most companies and factories are run better than this, your employer sounds like it is stuck in 1950, not surprising the workforce are off sick.

different companys have different rules....normally you can be off sick for the first seven days (i believe) before producing a sick note from your doctor.
I have never heard of a company making you pay back your sick pay, from what i can gather they can claim from social anyway(may be wrong but at some point they can)
Read your contract and see what it says in there regarding sickness, failing that get in touch with citizens advice and see if they can shed some light on it.

tis very wrong but hard to porve unless you are working over your contracted hours. If you have a contracted 48 hour week ad but you usually work 37, they are entitled to ask you to do the 48.
There are laws to how how many 12 hours shifts you can do in a row too

definite ill pay is dreadful, in case you finally end up in this place, telephone or write to any employer you're making usual money to and clarify your concern, do not wait till it truly is too late. maximum employer's are very sympathectic and could shrink your money till you're in positive condition adequate to return to artwork. you may touch your power providers, telephone employer and ask for a prepayment card then pay off what you may have the money for each and each week too. do not forget to cancel DD's at financial company you may continuously initiate them up back and the financial company is merely not creating wealth out of you going overdrawn and so on. it truly is truly difficult yet maximum companys will appreciate you lots for pre-warning them and attempting to maintain your funds decrease than administration. some human beings would say you may have insurance or mark downs in readiness for this variety of element going on, even nonetheless not all of us is in a intense paid interest and a few human beings actually merely make adequate to make ends meet, so forget approximately this variety of comments! desire this facilitates. x

this is definitely not the case, as the SSP comes from the government and not them anyway.
Try and speak to your local citizens advice bureau, they are taking advantage of you

It is my understanding that that practice (called "make up time") is only legal in the state of California.
You may want to check with your employers HR department, or if you don't feel that they would be a reliable resource, then you could contact your states labor board.
