Headphones are basically tiny speakers... And they work in exactly the same way...

There is a cone of some material, sometimes and usually cardborad which has a cylidrical magnet attached to it's centre... If you look at any speaker you'll see this.

Wrapped around the magnet (but not touching or connected at all) is a coil of wire. Wire coils turn into magnets when current passes through them (an "electromagnet") so when an electrical signal from your Ipod or CD player reaches this coil and activates the magnetic field, it repels/attracts the fixed magnet on the cone, making it move in or out.

The signal changes so fast and produces many vibrations in the cone. These vibrations are transfered to the air around it, and that's the sound you get!

They provide something for the electomagnet coils to push off of or pull back towards and drive the speaker.

they dont make sounds
they amplify it
it works on the principle of electrmagnetic induction
they increase the amplitude of the sound thus increasing its loudness they dont make sound
they make the sound loud.
