It may mean that is very low on fluid. Possibly it has been this way for a while and may be worn to the point where it is starting to seize up. Have it checked as soon as possible.

if it seems hotter than usual check that you auto oil cooler is not blocked, i don't know were the other dude lives but were i live auto trans fluid IS red and if it is brown you have got trouble moisture from your cooler contaminating your fluid, if it has a blackish tinge to it you have trouble with slipping bands in the box which will eventually block the filter screen in the bottom of the gearbox and you will lose drive, usually the cooler is in the bottom tank of the radiator but some models have a separate cooler , if you follow the pipes that run from your trans forward you will find the cooler

Feel it where? in the car?

Transmissions run about 225 degrees or so farenheit. You can check the dipstick and see if the fluid smells burnt or if its a weird color. If its not brown, brownish-red or red then something is wrong.

The only thing you can do is take it in or drive it until it dies, either way the fix will be expensive and there won't be much price difference driving til it dies vs fixing it now. Generally speaking.
