Islamic law is so strict that women had practically no rights and must be guarded by the husbands when going out or had to cover themselves with clothing so that others will not be tempted.

when they go outside the country (outside saudi arabia) yes, the law so far is that they go accompanied by a guardian (male), or have that guardian (legal guardian) to sign them off so they can travel unaccompanied. the legal guardian has to be legally authorised to do so. so, he has to be the father, or in case of father death, whomever comes legally as their legal guardian (I believe or the husband in case if they are married, but do not know one with this particular case). this piece of paper is signed at the passport office, and a copy of it is given at the passport control everytime they leave the country (if it is for open period). it can be assigned for a single trip, or multiple trips. I have no knowledge that this is going to be changed soon (as one answered), if it would, it must be an extremely good news.

no, its not necessary for a woman to be escorted by a man n all.. women do go in groups like friends together or family women etc and she alone could go as well./.

many people have wrong perceptions and concepts in their minds regarding women in islam, saudia laws etc etc.
