electric guitar
bass can be replicated on keyboards/synthesizers/software/samplers and with the right enginnering sound better then a real bass
on the other hand, many ways of playing electric guitar cannot be replicated digitally (by software, or sampling) requiring the use of a real electric guitar

it does not really matter which you learn first becuase both types are basically played the same way. Its just a slight difference in the fingers. Pick the one you find the most interesting and thats the one you should chose. I am a music teacher and I always tell my students that the hardest insturmnet to play is the one you do not want to play. I have been a teacher for four years now. I would recomend you start with the electirc guitar first since you already have it. THe electric guitar gets the most attention in your jazz band becuase the sound it produces is almost always required of the electric guitar. Bass guitars are usually a blending sound with the rest of the band. Its not that its less important then the other insturments becuase what would the song sound like without it. You can play any type of music you would like on either insturment. Just remember practice pracitce practice and have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy

Well learn the electric guitar first. You'll find it alot more useful.
Then later you could learn bass....

Bass is the easiest instrument to learn and the hardset instrument to master. Gutair is a blast, but gutair players are a dime a dozen (no offence to anyone out there)
Go get yourself a 4 string.
