newland, at 57 has finally come of age?something he has wanted all his life is exactly what he is walking away from! WHY? OR does he really think of a higher spiritual love that he shares for ellen which he is scared of destroying by making it tangible..............i m not really into sad endings but i cant even say this is one !it seems so sublime......HELP !!!!

He's walked away from Countess Ellen Olenska 25 years ago when he married May. Now she does not come to the window in Paris to give him a sign that she still cares for him. So he walks away from his real love.
