Go for the epidural. I was a big weeny, too. I had about 2 contractions and then demanded the pain meds! It made it so much easier and there were no problems at all.

If you know you are a weenie...get the epidural! They have it for that reason. There is a lot to be said for a woman who can do it naturally because it's very painful and if you can't tolerate pain enough to focus on the task of pushing it's going to be an issue. I had an epidural even though I didn't want one; I had high blood pressure and the alternative was seizures from the high blood pressure or vomiting from the other medication. It took longer but I didn't feel much until it was time to push and it wasn't that bad. I plan to have the epidural next time now.

I have had 3 children and on my 4th due anyday... my first 2 were with epidural and my last was without... don't be scared either way. The easiest was the one without because I was up and active within hours of delivery for the 2 with the epidural I had some low back pain and side effects to the epidural nothing serious to worry about just it can affect bowel movements and blood pressure. It is your choice but epidural does make it easier to cope during the actual delivery if you don't mind the slight side effects after. I personally prefer to be more mobile after... I will only have the epidural this time if the baby is still in the breech position. Natural is better if you want my honest opinion. But don't choose because I say so go with what you think is best for you... discuss it with your doc or midwife. They know your situation better.

Get the epidural. All you will feel is a little pinch in your back and in the matter of seconds you will feel so much better. If you truly do not want to go through it without it then get the epidural. Many women chose to go through the pain. There is very little risk these days since the epidural has become so popular that if you are that afraid of the pain then go for it and have a happy good birthing experience.

Ok first bad thing to do is be scared I know from personal experience. The first thing my friend told me was if you go in scared it will be horrible and hurt ect, ect, so when I went into labor I went in with the this will be a piece of cake attitude and it WORKED!!!!! The epidural was not bad at all..... I only felt a pinch, the sucky part was the bending over, it was uncomfortable. Now...don't wanna scare you but when I had my second child the epi sucked!!!!!!! I knew right away that the dr doing it was doing something wrong, you will feel it right away, and hear popping and cracking, if that happens DO NOT GO THROUGH WITH IT!!!!!! I'm sure you know what can happen with epi's. I ended up going natural with nubane it wasnt too terrible.... so like I said go in with the it's gonna be fine and not hurt attitude and you'll be alright and like I said the bending part sucks.....and if you get a good dr doing it you shouldn't feel too much pain from the epi... GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

I have something to tell you: Yes, though it IS painful, it is NOT as bad as the worst "war story" you hear from women who have delivered. I went natural the first time, and I did NOT go natural the second and third time, thank you. I STRONGLY requested the epidurals the next times.

Do not mind all the delivery room stories. I had family and so-called friends who just relished giving me nightmare-details, and I think it comes from a mean-spirit (though told in jest and idle conversation). Honestly, it is NOT as bad as any of those stories (if you are indeed hearing them).

Just do what you FEEL COMFORTABLE doing, and it will be just fine, I bet!!

GOOD LUCK

edited: and though you can still feel some pain with the epidural, it is by far a RELIEF, as it makes focusing on delivering the baby managable. Go the "weanie" route like me!

Yes, you can still feel the pain even with the epidural! I can't imagine what it would be like without it. I too, am a weeny.

I was induced with my daughter and I hadn't had an epidural, but when my doctor came in to see how far i was dialated he asked if I wanted one. I didn't have one with my son and had decided against it, but I was in a lot of pain. I got the epidural and the pain of getting it wasn't anything compared to the pain before I got it. Get the epidural, you'll be glad you did.

If you can't tolerate pain well, get the epidural. I had one with my daughter, and I really didn't like the "numb" sensation all over my lower half. I appreciated being out of pain, but the numb feeling just felt artificial- not natural at all...but I guess that's the idea. But then again, I get cavities filled without pain medicine because of the same reason- plus I hate needles. I'd rather have the little bit of pain than deal with the needle and the numb face.

Get the epidural. You are going to be more alert and enjoy every minute of bringing your baby into the world. After the baby arrives, the life changes that come with your new darling will be challenging enough...so you may as well give yourself a break!
