I want to start playing electric guitar. I already play accoustic, but i want to take it to the next level. I know I have to buy not only the guitar, but the amp and other accessories. Any help would be appreciated

I know exactly what you need that you might have not thought of... Schecter makes a great line of guitars with great action and are very reasonably priced. I went to Guitar Center on a budget, wanted a guitar to hold me over for a little while and found the omen 6... GREAT action, fast neck, and it looks great. I wouldn't recomend anything else when you're "on a budget". Go play play one and you'll understand what I mean... Don't buy used guitars... no telling whats wrong with them.

It's greatly going to depend on what you like and how it felels to you. There are tons of decent guitars in your price range. Fender Standard Stratocaster: Bolt on neck, very easy to play and due to it's design, can EASILY be modified as you grow and want new sounds. Epiphone Les Paul Standard: Set Neck (glued in), a heavy guitar but they have a nice heavy sound and a creamy smoothness to them. Mods are pretty much limited to pickup changes and runers. Those of the two best In your price range. Craigslist is a great source, don't buy new when you can buy used and save ALOT and if you decide you want to try something different, you won't lose anywhere near what you would if you bought new and changed your mind later.

YOU CAN BUY A USED ONE IN GOOD CONDITION FOR A LOT CHEAPER, AND USE IT UNTIL YOU ARE ABLE TO AFFORD A NEW ONE.... AND A LOT OF TIME IF YOU BUY ONE USEDUS USUALLY YOU CAN GET THE AMP AND STUFF TOGETHER
