Oprah doesn't seem to think so.

It's her money; I am not sure why others are so concerned about her generosity.

I would think more people would be supportive of such an offering.

The line of thinking you describe in your question (not saying you think this way) shows the pure ignorance and cluelessness that many American people have about the poor conditions in other countries especially Africa. America has a public school system. We have a free education, and medical clinics. The African education system pales in comparsion to even our worst. Inner city children get tons of money donated to them, food stamps, welfare checks, all kinds of things handed too them...AND THEY DO NOT APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!! Sorry to generalize here, but I am tired of inner city America parents looking for handouts. You have a free education and don't take advantage of it. Maybe if some of them would have taken advantage of it, they would know why she would choose to built a school in Africa. I've sponsored children in both the U.S. and third world countries, and my third world children are SOOOOOOOO much more grateful because basic neccessities are hard to come by. They are extremely poor, so poor that most Americans have no clue how they live. My American poor children, instead of asking for basic neccessities, wanted things like fancy electronic games or cell phones, etc. or they end up dropping out of school, getting pregnant and what not. So I totally understand what Oprah is saying. People in third world countries, appreciate everything we take for granted. And I applaud Oprah for building a school for girls in Africa, an AIDS ravaged country. American women have more than enough opportunity to make something of themselves in this country, but many particularlly those of color (like myself), choose to squander it. Sorry, I got a little side tracked...but the reason there is conflict is because she is the richest black woman ever, and she has the power and the clout to throw around for good where ever she wants, and people in this racist country can't handle it. Go Oprah!!!!!

are you kidding me??? oprah in worth way over 1.6 billion dollars now, yet you wonder if 40 million on a new school is too much? i dare you to do the math on that one, the percentage is way blow 1%, what is she going to do with the rest of that money? ill tell you, she wont give it to charity, she just bought another house worth over 325 million and spends only one week a year in it, with that money she could actually make a difference in Africa like she says she is, instead of helping a few hundred kids. dont get me wrong, she is nice and all but way overated, instead of buying 25 million dollar peices of jewelry she could help others a lot more. i have bearly any money yet i donate to others like crazy when i get the chance, its just common respect, which oprah appears to be lacking

She made a comment during the interview on CNN that rankled me. She In essence said that the young girls that were "picked" for her school weren't the most needy of the children that needed help. What about the children that got left out? Mrs. Winfrey is doing a good thing for sure but she also is loading the deck in her own schools favor. This sounds like suffer the little children , but these kids more than those....

Does it matter? At the end of the day, it's her money, and her tax break. I would not want someone criticising or judging me for how I spend my money.

Wether the school was a good or bad idea - that's a whole different story. It's fine to want to help, but then there's the dangers of creating this "elitist" school (Which it is..) whilst advocating anti-elitist regimes. Yet, even then, is it really fair to judge, if it's her money and she can do with it what she likes.

I don't think so considering the education level in South africa compared to the US...i think she did sth vy good and gave a good example to those filthy rich americans who are egoistic and wouldn't spent 10 cents on the poor.

No, its her money she can spend it on whatever she wants. For it to go towards some girls getting good education that they might not otherwise get, all the power to her.

No! What she spent on that school would be like a 50 year old modular for the U.S.

Of course she did....great PR stunt. I lost a lot of respect for her when she said she will not appease the white people of the US.
