I do not remember seeing an automatic transmission in Aberdeen.

Large cars are popular in the US, and standard transmissions tend to have large "throws" etc., on larger vehicles. So to avoid the bus driver type gear jamming experience big cars have automatic transmissions. People got used to autos on the big cars, so even when they downsized the demand was for autos.

We Americans are lazy, bottom line. I assume you are referring to Aberdeen, Scotland. I would bet you do not remembering seeing individuals drive to a grocery store or library that is located 3 or 5 blocks away in perfect weather either.

I agree with Xeraphile, manual over auto any day, especially in a high end sports car. A Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, or Aston Martin with an automatic is blasphemous, partial clemency bestowed upon column mounted paddle shift.

We developed the auto tranny, so it has snowballed into all makes.

Laziness, not caring about MPG, and driving on the 4 lane parking lots in LA, NY, Seattle, DC, etc. is easier.

They are easier to drive because you don't have to shift and they do not have parts that are guaranteed to where out like a clutch.
