I have a very heavy antique coal heater in my garage. Need to know if anyone has any information on these heaters?

Antique and vintage coal stoves, whether used for heating, cooking, or both, are highly sought after. A mini industry has sprung up around the USA involved in the restoration of these old relics. There is a lot of information available if you do the right search. A search for "antique coal stoves" (include the quotation marks in the Yahoo search box) yields 760 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I'm sure you will find a lot of interesting information on your coal heater. You can also try other search phrases such as "vintage stoves" or "antique stove restoration". Other phrases you can think of will also yield results.

If you can identify the manufacturer of your stove, you might do a search for the name. Many of these old cast iton stoves and heaters had the name of the manufacturer cast into the unit.

By the way, coal is still available in most areas of the country. While the old fashioned coal yards are all but gone, there are still sources in most areas. You might want to look in your local Yellow Pages or try asking a local wood stove dealer.

Good luck with your search for information.

We had one of these in our house for about 10 years when I was a kid...if it's info about brand names and $ value, I can't help but if it's about how to use one, I know a little.

Coal comes in different sizes, depending on the size of the holes or slots in the grate at the bottom of the heater. Ours took "chestnut" coal, which was larger than "pea" coal but smaller than "stove" coal. We lit our coal fires by starting a small wood fire first, and then shoveling some coal onto the wood fire when it was established.

Every couple of days we'd have to shake the ashes out of the grate at the bottom...in winter, we'd use the ashes to improve traction on the driveway.

If you plan to use your heater, you need to make sure its grating is sound, that there aren't any cracks in its walls (coal gas can kill you in your sleep), and that the stovepipe and chimney are sound.
