In general, do you think pretty girls get stereotyped as lacking in the IQ category while plain/ugly girls get deemed as smart?

I used to like dressing up, taking time to do my hair and makeup, but now that I have entered the workforce, I am afraid that looking pretty may affect my impression on others about my competence, IQ and ability to do my job. I also feel I wouldn't be taken as seriously. Although I acknowledge we should all look presentable, how far should a woman go in fixing herself if she wants to look good but be taken seriously?

This is a pretty hard question to answer. Society is actually contradictory in its stance on women. Yes, it is true that prettier women are stereotyped as unintelligent, but it is also true that all people have a tendency to choose the more attractive person to work with. It has been proven in social experiments that on first impressions, people are more likely to ignore an uglier girl and try to please a pretty one.

However, there is a fine line between looking good and looking dumb. For one, fix yourself up, but not like how the typical teenager looks. Meaning look nice, but don't dye your hair and let the roots show too far. Put on some makeup but not so much that it looks caked on. NO plastic surgery! People can tell. And never present yourself as worse than you are trying to please someone else.

No and I can prove it.

There is a girl in my grade. I can't use her name, so let's say she's Lizzie.

Lizzie is very pretty and had a boyfriend who moved away just recently. Everybody likes her for her personality and some guys love her. But the big thing is that she has a 4.0 on the Honor Roll and got the Presidential Award 4 Excellence last year.

Though that stereotype is used, there are many examples that can change that.

Yes, indeed it's been shown that "pretty" gets you in the door faster and advance faster, but when you need to do the job you had better know how, all looks aside. So yes to have the edge on people you would say are "less appealing" is an advantage, but with that advancement comes the actual ability to perform that position.

To be frank, sometimes they do are considered as not having the same IQ level as 'not so pretty' girls. But I recommend you to be yourself, do your job well and gradually everybody will start to take you as a woman with both 'beauty and brains'.

Go ahead and show them, my dear.

well be yourself for one, and stop worrying about how you look, who cares how you look as long as you do the job right, and that also answers your question about pretty girls and IQ the reason is that you talk more about looking pretty than what actually matters, looks are not important it is the person that really matters
I work with several visually attractive women but it is the fact that they do their job and do it well that makes me notice them

I beleive that you should be yourself and feel comfortable presenting yourself as you wish but if you are focusing too much on what others think then it begins to bring your intelligence and competence into question. There should be no need for you to waste your time on what others think.
