i am spanish and i think your name is beautiful and is a holy name. if you explain to your family, which i am sure are catholic and like biblical names, they would realize what an extraordinary name your son has.......
ethan means "masculine, solid, strong". it is a biblical name in the old testament. in fact, it is another name of abraham.....
"...Abraham,faith, self-nullification and love were etched indelibly on all subsequent Jewish souls and for them they longed for their great leader who God would name Ethan .. "
...in Psalm 89 the name Eitan HaEzrachi refers to the Hebrew patriarch Abraham.
also, it is ok for them to call him Etan as in standard hebrew it is pronounced Etan or Eitan.......lol. this means they are actually saying his name in original hebrew which is wonderful!
the name alexander is greek and means "protector of mankind"
which is alejandro in spanish.
so your baby's name means the "strong protector of mankind". isn't that beautiful?

It's a good name. And don't fuss if your relatives can't pronounce it right (which is probably one of the reasons they don't like it) because each culture has a way of pronounciation. Sooner or later, they would grow accustomed to the name and realize that it's not because you choose a non-traditional hispanic name for your child that you are denouncing your origins.

The "TH" sound is very difficult to pronounce in some languages that don't include the "H" sound.
My Dad's first language is Dutch and they apparently don't use the "H" sound in their language. To this day neither he nor any of his brothers also born in Holland are unable to say the "TH" sound. When he says "three" for example, it always sounds like "tree". It is like this with the French as well.
I suspect that Spanish is the same. I don't think it has anything to do with it not being a nice name, but simply difficult for folks whose first language it is to pronounce.

It's a beautiful name, and I know what you mean because my family is Hispanic as well and they pronounce my cousin Brian's name like BRAIYAN. Haha. But don't worry. Like I said... it's a beautiful name, and it's just something that your family is gonna have to learn OR something that you are gonna have to get used to hearing. :)
