what a horrible situation, the poor thing. The chances of the baby being normal are a bit less than normal, about 75 percent if shared bloodline. So decent chance, however thats physical, mental problems can come up too, quite frequently. I have no idea what I would do if I was her, although i dont think i could look at the child. Try to be really supportive of whatever she does, coz if she confided in you, then she must need your help. Good luck to you and her

It has a very good chance of being normal. The problem with incest or inbreeding is that the father would pass on any recesive defects to his daughter. So now the chances of both of them carrying the same genes that are harmful is more likely. Same with certain ethnic populations carry for certain genetic abnormalities. Downs syndrome which is the cause of many mental retardation is due to an extra number 21 chromosome which would already be present in any case. However, they both may not have any harmful defects. I would ill advise that she keeps the baby due to the environment and the mental stress it might cause her, but that is her decission. She should go to a docctor and have the normal testing done, and in her case probaobly a amniosentisis to do testing for defects that would be tested for anyways. So to answer your question, the actual act of incest does not cause mental retardation it just is pulling on the same gene pool.

First of all.. YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN and don't Freak out about anything you read on here... You are 16 and vulnerable to people judging, Do not read negative comments that people would post on here the best thing you can do is find the appropiate help You need to share this your parents or a friend, or someone mature enough to guide you, go and see a Doctor so they can make a few check ups on you and your baby, try to find any support group for girls in your same situation Stop any cigarettes, drugs and alcohol consumption immediatly. Good luck

That is really sad. The baby can be born normally, and they cannot tell if the baby will be affected unless he/she has a severe abnormality. If this girl does not feel like she can raise this child, you should talk to her about adoption. Try searching under "pregnancy incest" or "pregnancy from incest". I wish the best to this girl and her child and my prayers are with both of them.

Hi,
I found this:
a baby born from incest is significantly more likely to have birth defects and mental and physical issues than a normal baby.
AND THIS:
If you are a blood relative of the sexual abuser, your child has a 55 percent to 85 percent chance of being normal.
I wish her and her baby well!

Wow I tried to search this but didnt come up with much for you :( All I can say is that from what Ive seen on those sites, There is good chance for serious problems. Serioud developmental problems, deaf, blind, physical defercts all kinds of issues. She may not believe in abortion as I myself dont either BUT in this case, I think the chances of it living a normal healthy life are slim. Abortion would probably be the best. Not to mention the mental problems when the child realizes what he was produced from and the mother having issues as well...I say tell her to just go get an abortion. It kills me to even type those words but this is arough situation. God bless that poor girl. I will keep her in my prayers,

It won't necessarily be born with defects. Incest increases something called "homozygotes." Only if the homozygote encodes a defect will the child be born with a birth defect.

Parental incest is known to sometimes do severe psychological harm to a child, due to the child's physical, mental, and emotional dependence on a parent, due to total disparity in the power of authority, due to the disparity in emotional and physical maturity, and finally due to the fact that the incestuous relationship may damage or destroy healthy aspects of childhood development. Children have been observed to go into disassociated or reclusive mental or emotional states due to shame associated with their parent's predation, which is thought to overwhelm their coping capabilities. Becoming "dead inside" is another tactic children have been observed to use in an attempt to deaden the associated pain. Suppression of emotions, as well as a halt or a severe reduction in personal growth has been observed, similar to the effects studied in the psychology of torture. Some children involved in incest suffer from what is known as complex trauma due to developmental immaturity, due to repeated incests, and/or due to being forced to ignore the incest(s) as a child.
In adulthood, chronic, complex, and cyclic post traumatic stress has been observed in some individuals of childhood parental incest. Shame, suspicion, and unconscious alienation is thought by some psychologists to occur in the first stage of trauma transformation as the victim attempts to suppress past pain. Rage, terror, and sorrow have been observed to surface in the second stage as the victim begins to become conscious of the incest acts. In the last stage of trauma transformation, genuine self-esteem, genuine desire, and, on occasion, genuine joy have been seen in victims. These stages have been observed to take decades to complete and, in extreme cases, to cycle on until the victim's death.
Some victims of parental incest suffer severe depression, and/or have committed suicide, which is thought to be due to the inability to accomplish the associated trauma transformations shown above. Some victims also predate against their own children thus resulting in a legacy of incest in following generations, a form of vicious cycle. Often, even if trauma transformation was successful, survivors have reported that due to the betrayal of innocence, the incest-associated losses, and the trauma-transformation related costs, their lives were much worse off than peers who had not suffered incest by their parents.
