I may relocate through work to Miami and my girlfriend is planning on moving with. We are from Chicago...Lincoln Park area, were is a good spot to live in miami ( or surrounging areas)? Something that would best suit a young (under 30) couple who enjoys a city atmosphere and everything it has to offer..... but is afraid of getting caught up in the fakeness of South Beach and rep of 24hr non stop party....Coconut Grove? Ft. Lauderdale? North Miami Beach? Any suggestions please.

It depends mostly on WHERE you will be working. Transport & traffic both suck (except along Miami's Metro-rail corridor). You'll probably like close in Ft. Lauderdale or downtown Hollywood (the newest hot area) unless you have to work in downtown Miami or South Dade. In that case, Brickell, South Beach (its not all fake -- 80,000 people reside there, including lots of families with children), South Miami & Kendall all have lots of middle class & upper class residences & are close to metrorail. In S. Dade it will help if you have a working knowledge of Spanish.

Aventura or Hallendale beach areas. Pretty, normal. 45 mins from Lauderdale and Miami - you're about smack in the middle. Good shopping too. =)

Downtown or Midtown Miami would be your best bet. You're right in the city center which has everything within a block of each other.

I agree with EVERYTHING Mlaw posted, just wanted to add my 2 cents. I lived in Lighthouse Point for 4 yrs. That area is nice. And it has GREAT resale. But houses now are so expensive it's nuts. We just started to have kids, and I was very concerned about the quality of schooling down there. Our jobs sucked financially. We worked about 30 mins from home. Other jobs out there--would have been 90 mins or more away. Needless to say, I begged my husband to move back to the midwest. Anyway, if you must move down there--I would avoid Miami/Dade. Look in Broward and Palm Beach. You can probably afford West, but try to go East (for resale). I also agree with trying to live close to work. As far as schools, you might have to do private.
