I had been able to play DVDs bought in South Africa (Zone 2) and US (Zone 1) on my laptop for the past three years. All of a sudden DVDs bought in US can't play because my DVD player is said to be fixed for Zone 2. How is this possible?

I've tried, to no avail, to find software that could help me remote control the Zones. I also tried to find a multi-zone fixed DVD player - no success.

Can anybody help?

Most laptop DVD's have a feature allowing them to change the default region. However, they usually have a firmware limit of 4 changes before they become totally locked to a region.

If you alternated playing zone 1 and zone 2 discs, there is the possibility that the software has been making changes in the background, and you are now stuck with a zone 2 player.
