Tut, Tut by John Sciezka and Lane Smith was my favorite book when I was littler - it's about three boys who travel through time a lot, and in this one they end up in Ancient Egypt. There's some girl-power in there, too - there's a strong little sister in there.
Caddie Woodlawn - I don't know who it's by. It's a nice, homey, story about at a very headstrong girl during the Civil War era.
Anything by Peg Kehret, although that might be more a bit too old for them.
The Hunting of the Last Dragon (?) by Sherryl Jordan - an adventure story set in medieval Europe about an orphan and a kidnapped girl from China.
Well, good luck!

Any of the Ramona books from Beverly Cleary, the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, and Amelia Bedelia (don't remember the author on those) were favorites of mine as a child.

My favorites at that age were The Secret Garden and A Little Princess, both by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Becaue of Winn Dixie. In fact all of Kat DiCamillo books are wonderful. I am an adult and have read everything by her because the stories are so great. I should warn that the Tale of Desperaux, while my favorite, is a bit dark.

Will your daughter be starting up sixth or seventh grade in October? those kinds of issues did not initiate till seventh grade even as i change right into a baby, such as college dances. maximum activities that friends had that in touch something like that still began happening round that year. even inspite of the indisputable fact that I went to a 'center college' that had fifth-eighth grade interior a similar construction, there change right into a great massive difference between the fifth/sixth graders (who nevertheless had recess) and the seventh/eighth graders. i wager think concerning the party yet some mothers and fathers (like the mummy you suggested) might want to have a topic with it. in my opinion, i might want to attend one extra year yet perhaps you may want to pull it off. in case you invite some mothers and fathers, supervise issues and do not enable any 'sluggish dancing' i imagine it will be ok.
