Gene Kelly plays a silent movie star in the 1920s. He's partnered in these films with a blonde bombshell actress ( in whom he is not interested). When the first of the " talkies " is made, his acting has to include audible dialogue. Not a problem for him, he has a pleasant speaking voice. The problem is his leading lady has voice that is nasally and whiny at the same time. Even after voice coaching, she is still too appalling and the audiences who view the rushes just break out into hysterical laughter.
In the mean time, Gene Kelly has met a pretty chorus girl played by Debbie Reynolds. She can dance and sing like an angel. Gene falls for her and conspires with the film's director to have Debbie record the singing and dialogue for the film. All goes well till at the premiere, the audience asks for a live performance from Gene and the blonde bombshell. They have to quickly set up a microphone behind the stage curtain so that Debbie can do the vocals. Everything goes wrong and the truth is revealed. The rest of the film just resolves all the problems with an eventual happy ending.
The styles of dancing reflect the1920s jazz era and Gene's famous routine in the street when he sings the title song is a mixture of many styles of dance and acrobatics. You really need to watch the film
