Meterologically rain comes from layer cloud, while showers come from cumiliform cloud. In forecasts though, rain is usually continuoos, while showers last for about 20 minutes. Showers are often heavier than rain.

As a forecaster, I can explain!

The rain will continue at a steady rate, whilst later on, when the band of rain coulds start to break up, the rain will come in bursts (showers).
So theoretically there is no difference between rain and showers, there is only a difference between a continuous downpour and a shower! Rain is just the actuall thing falling from the clouds (known as Precipitation)

Showers
It implies short duration, intermittent, and scattered precipitation (rain, snow, ice pellet) of a more unstable, convective nature.

I Highly recomend

TRULYFULLY, there isn't a big differnce. Meteorologist usually depict showers as meaning light or short lived and rain as meaning heavy. Either way there the same thing. Just that showers are briefer and rain is more persistant, as a SHOWER can be as heavy as them meaning RAIN.

Showers are of short duration but rain are continuous and of longer duration.Showers cover a small area whereas rain covers a large area.Shower drops are bigger than rain drops.Showers come from convective type of clouds whreas rain comes from strative form of clouds.

When they say that in Colorado, it usually means the temperature is right at the margin for rain or snow formation and the forecasters don't know whether it's going to come down as rain or snow, so they just say "showers."
