It's probably not the temperature that is waking your baby. The baby is waking because that's what babies do. At five months, a baby is unlikely to sleep through the night as he still needs frequent feeds. His tummy is tiny and can still only hold a very small amount of milk.
Incidentally, your baby doesn't need a cushion (I assume you mean pillow?). Babies should lie flat, on their backs.
Dress the baby in a normal baby grow with a vest and cover him with one sheet and a blanket, both of which should be tucked under the mattress at the edges.
Buy a room thermometer and make sure the temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius. Remember, a baby can overheat very easily and piling blankets and extra clothes on top can be dangerous.

A baby is only as cold or as warm as you are. You should never put a space heater in ababys room or dress them in layers...... SIDS happens more when a baby is too warm... If you read a book it will tell you to dress your baby in warm PJ's, you can put a light blanket on him, if he kicks it off feel the back of his neck if it is cool to touch then he may be too cool ( Hands are NOT a intication of a baby being to hot or cold)and you should find a way to tuck the blanket around the matress or a special sleeping wedge( you can get this at toys r us or babies r us) that will help them from moving too much. ( Ummmm never no pillows in the crib) My son is now 8 months and I am and have gone through all the same concernes!

I would put a hat on my baby and socks. I would also dress baby in layers. 1 or 2 cotton layers, and then a blanket sleeper over that (the fuzzy sleeper). If baby kicks off covers, I'm not concerned, and the hat, along with warmer clothing will keep baby warm. One, cold winter, I used a fuzzy "snow suit" with a hood for baby. Worked great!

baby sleeping bags are the answer - I wouldn't be without ours now. You can get different tog ratings for seasonal temperatures and you dont use blankets with them so nothing can cover baby's head or come loose in the night.
Most babywear places stock them but Grobag is a brand you can look up and is stocked in places like Mothercare and online. In my opinion these are a must!!!

I was told not to put anything in my daughters crib because of the risk of SIDS. I was told that stuffed animals, pillows, bumpers and blankets should be left out. I would ask your babies doctor what they think will be safe and most comfortable for your baby...

pick up an inexpensive space heater if you can't keep his room warm enough without making the rest of your house too warm... you could also try a sleep sack (large size)--heres a link to a bunch of different styles sold online:
http://www.nextag.com/baby-sleep-sack/search-html
or find a baby sleep positioner to stop him from rolling around so much... its better to get a baby sleep positioner (considering that it was designed for this specific reason) than using a couple of pillows, which could pose a suffocation hazard. here's an ebay search for those, so you can see a few styles:
