I think it would be 'the dancer in the dark'. But I don't know too many sad movies, so Shoot.

How is the ending of the movie notebook sad??? They died in each others' hands a natural death! It was uplifting if anything IMHO

By far, I'd say "Grave of the Fireflies." It's about a young boy and his little sister's struggle to survive in Japan during World War II. Seriously - everybody I know that saw it cried at some point during that movie. It may be animated (anime, actually), but so far, it's the saddest movie I've ever seen.

Old Yeller and Fox and the Hound are probably the saddest movies of all time...which is odd because they're geared toward a younger audience.
